Projects (selected) – HORIZON 2020

iBORDERCTRL – INTELLIGENT PORTABLE CONTROL SYSTEM (Duration: September 2016 – August 2019)

iBorderCtrl is an innovative project that aims to enable faster and thorough border control for third country nationals crossing the land borders of EU Member States (MS), with technologies that adopt the future development of the Schengen Border Management. iBorderCtrl includes software and hardware technologies ranging from portable readers and scanners, various emerging and novel subsystems for automatic controls, highly reliable wireless networking for mobile controls, and secure backend storage and processing. One of the main goals of the project is to design and implement a comprehensive system that adopts mobility concepts and consists of a two-stage-procedure, designed to reduce cost and time spent per traveller at the border crossing station. iBorderCtrl also focuses on the land border crossing points: road, walkway, train stations. It addresses the better facilitation of thorough checking required for third country nationals that intend to cross EU borders.

PROTECT – PERVASIVE AND USER FOCUSED BIOMETRICS BORDER PROJECT (Duration: September 2016 – August 2019)

The  PROTECT project deals with the problem of queuing but also that of proactively detecting spoofing attempts through advanced application of multimodal biometrics and counter spoofing. Specifically, the PROTECT system will investigate and propose new less obtrusive approaches to biometric data capture and verification, particularly the use of emerging and contactless biometrics. In particular, an extension to existing ABC gates will be considered whereby the identification process takes place in a biometric corridor that can be passed by the traveller without stopping. Such an approach will optimise security and integrity of facilitation of travellers, as well as enhancing the experience for citizens including for non-EU and frequent travellers.

PROTON – Modelling the PRocesses leading to Organised crime and TerrOrist Networks (Duration: September 2016 – September 2019)

PROTON aims at improving existing knowledge on the processes of recruitment to organised crime and terrorist networks through an innovative integration between social and computational sciences.

PROTON’s impact will improve the quality of prevention policies directed towards organised crime and terrorist networks, while also providing significant innovations in the social, technological and computational sciences. Throughout the course of the project, PROTON works closely with different policy makers and end-users in order to ensure that the final results address their specific needs and expectations.

RESIN – CLIMATE RESILIENT CITIES AND INFRASTRUCTURES (Duration: May 2015 – November 2018)

The RESIN project aims to create a set of tools and methodologies that would help city administrators to increase climate resilience of their cities. By using different experiences of the partner cities in the project, a coherent structure for adaptation planning was created. This structure is called the Resin Conceptual Framework (RCF) and it provides a description of steps that need to be undertaken in order to achieve specific goals of climate adaptation planning. The e-Guide’s main role is to guide the users through the process of generating an effective adaptation plan and provide (access to) supporting tools for this process.

Q-RAPIDS – QUALITY-AWARE RAPID SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT (Duration: November 2016 – October 2019)

The main goal of the Q-Rapids project is to define an evidence-based, data-driven quality-aware rapid software development methodology and the platform supporting decision makers based on the code/process quality indicators and quality requirements. Quality requirements (QRs) are incrementally elicited, refined and improved based on data gathered from code repositories, software development project management tools, system usage and quality of service. The data is analysed and aggregated into quality-related key strategic indicators which are presented to decision makers using a highly informative dashboard and visualization techniques.

The expected output and impact of the project is increasing level of quality in software products and increase of productivity in software development life-cycles by supporting decision-making in software engineering and decreasing maintenance effort related to fixing quality-related bugs and defects in developed products.
